Fraudsters posing as legitimate contractors are swindling homeowners in the UK out of thousands of pounds for roofing work that is either not completed, poorly executed, or entirely unnecessary, as reported by Citizens Advice. This consumer advice charity states that one in ten of all scams recorded over the past year were related to roofing, making it the most frequent type of fraud brought to their attention.

Highlights

  • Roofing scams account for 10% of all reported scams to Citizens Advice in the past year.
  • In the year leading up to August, 9,000 complaints were received regarding roofing work, with 2,205 suspected as scams.
  • Victims often pay thousands of pounds for work that is left unfinished or done to a poor standard.
  • Scammers frequently employ aggressive doorstep sales tactics.
  • Citizens Advice urges consumers to conduct thorough checks on traders and request written agreements before hiring them.

Details

Citizens Advice received 9,000 complaints about roofing work, including issues with construction, repairs, and weatherproofing, in the year leading to August. Of these, 2,205 were suspected scams, an increase from the previous year. Dame Clare Moriarty, chief executive of Citizens Advice, highlighted that scammers exploit the fact that roofs are often out of sight and reach, making it difficult for homeowners to inspect the work themselves.

One victim, 68-year-old Crystal, recounted paying £5,500 for a roof replacement that was left incomplete, leading to significant water damage. Similarly, Charlotte, 65, was defrauded of £3,500 by tradesmen she hired online to fix a leaking gutter, only to find no work had been done. Three-quarters of these fraudsters use aggressive "doorstep" sales tactics, pressuring homeowners into agreeing to work.

Why it matters

These scams not only cause significant financial loss to homeowners but can also leave their properties with severe damage. Lord Bichard, chair of National Trading Standards, described roofing fraud as "particularly cruel," noting that victims can lose their life savings in a matter of hours. He emphasized that these criminals leave victims with damaged homes, financial hardship, and a profound sense of vulnerability long after they are gone. It is crucial for consumers to be vigilant and take preventative measures to avoid falling victim to such schemes.
