In Gaza City, 34-year-old Nisreen Touman has faced unimaginable tragedy, losing two husbands and two children during Israel's offensive on Gaza. The war, which began in October 2023, has left her grappling with profound grief and a relentless struggle for survival.

Highlights

  • Nisreen Touman lost her first husband, Sami, and their two children, aged 5 and 2, in June 2024.
  • Four and a half months after her initial loss, she remarried her late sister's husband, taking on the care of his four children.
  • In July 2025, while pregnant, Nisreen tragically lost her second husband, Mohammed, in another strike.
  • She gave birth to her daughter, Sidra, four months after Mohammed's death.
  • Despite her immense suffering, Nisreen is determined to continue living for her daughter, Sidra.

Details

Before the conflict, Nisreen enjoyed a stable and happy life in Nuseirat with her first husband, Sami, and their two sons. However, on June 8, 2024, after visiting relatives, their home area came under heavy bombardment. Sami was fatally shot in the head by a quadcopter while trying to bring their children indoors. Minutes later, their house was targeted, and Nisreen lost both her children, Mahmoud and Laith.

This devastating event occurred on one of the deadliest days of the conflict, during an Israeli military operation in the Nuseirat refugee camp, which resulted in 274 Palestinian deaths and 698 injuries. Nisreen's extended family suffered greatly, with 18 members killed. Overwhelmed by grief, Nisreen later married her late sister's husband to help care for his four children, who had also lost their mother. Tragically, in July 2025, her second husband, Mohammed, was also killed in a strike, leaving Nisreen pregnant and once again widowed.

Why it matters

Nisreen's story is a poignant testament to the devastating human cost of the conflict in Gaza. Her experience of enduring multiple losses—two husbands and two children—while striving to rebuild her life, highlights the profound and personal tragedies faced by civilians in the region. Such narratives underscore that the war is not merely a matter of statistics but a source of immense suffering and unimaginable human drama, urging a deeper understanding of the humanitarian crisis.
