While Israel grapples with an unresolved election, the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories remains tense, marked by continued sieges in the West Bank and a tragic loss of life in Gaza. The election results, which saw Arab-led parties achieve a record number of seats, have sparked a debate among Israeli politicians regarding their legitimacy.

Highlights

  • Palestinian-led parties secured a record 19 seats in the Israeli election, yet this led to delegitimizing rhetoric from some Israeli politicians.
  • Prime Minister Netanyahu's Likud party claimed the election was "stolen" by Palestinian parties, but these allegations were unproven, and the election committee chairman declared the election "conducted properly."
  • In the West Bank, particularly Hebron, severe sieges were imposed, with 10 entrances sealed, approximately 5,000 people displaced, and over 120 arrests.
  • Attacks continued in Gaza, and the UN human rights office warned that Palestinians are being pushed into an increasingly smaller area, with the "Yellow Line" becoming a "kill zone."
  • Gaza's health system is at risk of collapse, with 26 hospitals out of service and fuel shortages threatening remaining facilities.

Details

In the Israeli elections, the Ra'am and Joint List parties, representing Palestinian citizens, garnered nearly 840,000 votes, marking a 64 percent increase from 2022. Their inclusion in opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot's bloc could have formed an anti-Netanyahu coalition with 67 seats. However, right-wing parties have ruled out partnerships with Palestinian factions.

During the sieges in Hebron, 13 businesses were demolished, and the homes of two men accused of an attack were blown up by the army. Governor Khaled Dudin announced the operation's end and the return of displaced families. However, the governor estimated daily economic losses in the city, which accounts for about 40 percent of Palestinian industrial output, to be between 10 to 12 million shekels (approximately $3.2 million to $3.8 million).

In Gaza, the death toll since last year's ceasefire has reached 1,593. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) documented 397 settler attacks causing casualties or damage in the first 26 days of October, the highest monthly figure since OCHA began tracking such incidents in 2006. As winter approaches, humanitarian conditions are deteriorating; Gaza's Social Development Ministry states that approximately 200,000 tents are needed, but only dozens have arrived due to Israeli entry restrictions.

Why it matters

The political instability in Israel and the escalating violence in the Palestinian territories are intensifying regional tensions. The sieges in the West Bank and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza are further worsening the living conditions of the Palestinian people. This situation has the potential to undermine long-term peace efforts and draws international attention to human rights violations in the region.
