Details

The incident occurred at a hotel in Naha. According to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, CCTV footage showed a foreign man entering a hotel room with a woman and later leaving with her belongings. Police apprehended the 20-year-old suspect, who matched the description, and he was subsequently arrested at a local police station.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the incident was "extremely brutal and vicious," emphasizing that the Japanese government has lodged a strong protest with the US side and is seeking maximum cooperation in the investigation. She also called for "stricter discipline among US military personnel" and "thorough measures" to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The US Marine Corps confirmed that a serviceman assigned to the III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa is in Japanese custody. US Ambassador to Japan, George Glass, met with Japan's Foreign Ministry and Okinawa's governor, offering sincere condolences and pledging full cooperation as the investigation continues.

Why it matters

Okinawa's strategic location makes it crucial for both Tokyo and Washington in deterring potential aggression from China in the region. However, the presence of US military personnel has long been a source of discontent among local residents due to issues such as noise, aircraft crashes, and personnel conduct. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, approximately 6,000 US military personnel have been arrested in Okinawa since 1972, with 80 arrests in 2024, the highest number in 20 years.
