Details
The Tuareg separatist group, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), announced a "strategic and controlled withdrawal" of its forces from Kidal. An FLA spokesperson indicated that the withdrawal occurred without direct fighting but was influenced by the "disproportionate use of aerial assets by Russian mercenaries from the Africa Corps."
Kidal had been seized by the FLA and the al-Qaeda-linked Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in April of this year, an offensive that also resulted in the death of Mali's defense minister. Mali's junta, which came to power through coups in 2020 and 2021, has increasingly relied on Russian paramilitary support in its fight against groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
Why it matters
According to Beverly Ochieng, associate director of Control Risks, the recapture of Kidal affirms the military-led government's authority and boosts the army's morale. However, Ochieng added that while significant, this retaking is largely "symbolic" and not "decisive" in Mali's broader campaign against jihadist and separatist groups. Human rights organizations have frequently accused both the Malian army and Russian paramilitaries of committing war crimes and killing civilians during military operations.
