The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has announced that its air defenses intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Houthi forces. This incident occurred amidst intensified clashes between forces loyal to the internationally recognized Yemeni government and the Iran-aligned Houthis across critical fronts in the country.

Highlights

  • The Saudi-led coalition reported intercepting and destroying a ballistic missile and a drone targeting its southern region.
  • Houthi-affiliated media claimed seven people were wounded in coalition air strikes on the city of Hodeidah.
  • Yemeni government forces are continuing their campaign to reclaim positions from the Houthis in the strategic al-Jawf governorate.
  • Houthi forces maintain a siege on the city of Taiz, blocking essential supplies and exacerbating a humanitarian crisis.

Details

Major General Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, stated that air defenses "intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile" targeting Saudi Arabia's southern region, following a similar interception of a drone. Concurrently, the Saudi Civil Defense authority issued and later lifted alerts for "potential danger" in several southern cities, including Abha.

In Yemen, Houthi-affiliated media reported that seven individuals were wounded in Saudi-led coalition air strikes on Hodeidah. Of these, four were injured at the Ras Isa port dock, and three others at an oil company site in the Bajil district. The coalition has not yet commented on these reports.

Yemeni government forces are pressing their offensive to regain territories from the Houthis in al-Jawf, Marib, and al-Bayda. Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili, the Yemeni army spokesman, stated that forces conducted 1,272 "targeting operations" within 24 hours, resulting in the deaths of approximately 500 Houthi fighters and the destruction or disablement of nearly 170 vehicles or heavy weapons.

Why it matters

Full-scale fighting in Yemen reignited in September after the Houthis made significant gains, consolidating their control over the Red Sea coast. The internationally recognized Yemeni government launched "Operation Dawn of Yemen" last month to reclaim Houthi-held sites and restore control over territories seized by the group, which captured the capital Sanaa in 2014. The deepening humanitarian crisis in Taiz, with the blockade of essential supplies, underscores the severe impact of the conflict on millions of civilians.
