A player-versus-player (PvP) multiplayer mod developed for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC will no longer be released after its creator stated they were contacted by Sony Interactive Entertainment and asked not to make the project public.

Highlights

  • Mod creator Speclizer announced the cancellation of the multiplayer mod, which had been in development since January 2026, due to a request from Sony.
  • Sony Interactive Entertainment formally asked the mod not to be released to the public.
  • This cancellation follows Naughty Dog's own decision to scrap its official The Last of Us multiplayer project in late 2023.
  • Speclizer had previously shared 25 minutes of gameplay footage for the mod and gathered support via Patreon.

Details

Mod creator Speclizer shared on social media that the multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2, which had been in development since January, was scheduled for release this month. However, Speclizer received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that the mod not be released to the public. Speclizer expressed being "extremely sad" that the project would not see the light of day.

In June, Speclizer uploaded 25 minutes of gameplay for the mod. The project's use of a payment component through Patreon likely contributed to it catching Sony's attention. This news is a disappointment for dedicated fans of The Last of Us multiplayer, especially given the prior cancellation of an official multiplayer title.

Why it matters

This development comes after Naughty Dog, the game's developer, canceled its own official multiplayer project set in The Last of Us universe in late 2023. The studio stated that releasing the game as planned would have required dedicating all its resources to post-launch content for years, hindering its ability to develop future single-player games. Notably, former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida and The Last of Us Online director Vinit Agarwal both praised the canceled official multiplayer game as "great," highlighting the demand for such experiences, which are now being stifled by copyright enforcement.
