Highlights

  • The WHO has issued a warning that ongoing delays in delivering medical supplies to Gaza could lead to dire outcomes.
  • The WHO's representative in Palestine urged Israeli authorities to ease restrictions on health-related shipments.
  • A consignment of prosthetics and related equipment has been denied entry four times in the last six months.
  • There is a call for multiple entry points to ensure a consistent and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
  • The onset of winter, coupled with inadequate shelter, is heightening the risk of disease outbreaks.

Details

The World Health Organization highlighted that approved aid can only enter Gaza via the Kerem Shalom crossing in the south, while the Rafah crossing, also in the southern region, is reserved for limited movement of people, including patients seeking medical treatment abroad. Reinhilde Van De Weerdt, the WHO's representative in Palestine, emphasized that delayed or non-priority supplies do not save lives, underscoring the urgency of timely and appropriate deliveries.

Van De Weerdt pressed Israeli authorities to relax controls on medical provisions, arguing that essential medicines should not be classified as dual-use items, given their universal acceptance as standard medical necessities for healthcare facilities globally. She revealed that a shipment containing prosthetic limbs and mobility aids has faced rejection on four separate occasions within the past six months. In contrast, she noted that other medicines generally fare better, with nearly nine out of ten approvals and only a small fraction, slightly over one percent, being turned away.

Four additional primary access points into Gaza – Kissufim, Gate 96, Erez, and Erez West – are currently sealed off and entirely controlled by Israel. With winter approaching, the lack of sufficient shelter, clean water, and sanitation facilities is increasing the danger of disease transmission and rodent-borne infections, further exacerbated by the destruction of public health laboratories.

Why it matters

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains extremely challenging, even almost a year after a fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. The persistent delays in critical medical supplies worsen an already strained healthcare system, putting patients' lives at risk. As winter sets in, the inability to meet basic needs like shelter and clean water deepens the public health crisis in the region, increasing the likelihood of preventable diseases spreading among the population.
