Student leader Neha Bora has become the prominent face of the youth protest movement challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu majoritarian government in India. Until recently little known outside college politics, the 29-year-old Bora has rapidly emerged as a symbol for a generation questioning Modi's grip on power.

Modi's government has recently faced significant political challenges, including education scandals and controversial changes to electoral rolls that have stripped 130 million people of their voting rights. This context has fueled the rise of a Gen Z-led movement.

Highlights

  • Neha Bora has become one of the most visible leaders of the youth protests against the Modi government.
  • Bora's "guerrilla tactics" to evade police and outmaneuver security forces have made her a cult figure among young people.
  • Veteran opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, are seen leaning on Bora's leadership.
  • The Modi government has labeled Bora and similar activists as "urban Naxals" or "intellectual Naxals," targeting left-wing politics.
  • Bora's activism began with the 2019 citizenship law protests and has since evolved into leadership of student-led movements.

Details

Neha Bora studied arts at universities in Delhi and spent over a decade at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), a hub of political activism, as a postdoctoral theatre student. There, she joined the All India Students' Association (AISA), a significant force at JNU for over three decades. As the current national president of AISA, Bora has participated in protests, including those demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Bora gained national recognition on October 10 when she evaded police during a protest in central Delhi, leading a crowd of several hundred. Although police eventually apprehended her, the incident significantly boosted her popularity among the youth. Videos of Bora confronting police have garnered millions of views on social media and inspired video game characters.

Why it matters

Neha Bora's rise signifies a crucial shift in youth political engagement in India and growing opposition to the Modi government. Unlike traditional political leaders, Bora's street politics tactics and effective use of digital platforms demonstrate a potent ability to mobilize young people and challenge the incumbent power. This development could herald a new era in Indian politics and potentially influence future elections.
