The fire was first reported on Thursday, but firefighting efforts were complicated by the inaccessible terrain. Milna Mayor Frane Lozic stated that they believed they had the fire under control by Saturday, but strong sea winds that evening caused the flames to reignite and spread rapidly. "We thought we got it reined in yesterday, that it is all over, and then it happened: Sea wind starts blowing at 9 p.m. and out of nowhere, there is a monster," Lozic recounted.
Tourist ships assisted in the overnight evacuation efforts, with many tourists spending the night on the beach awaiting rescue. No fatalities were reported due to the blaze. However, a 76-year-old Croatian woman was hospitalized in critical condition after reportedly falling from a ship during the evacuation. A 27-year-old man received medical attention for smoke inhalation and was later released.
