The Nasdaq stock exchange, a key indicator for the technology sector on Wall Street, has achieved an all-time high. This surge comes as investors appear to set aside concerns regarding AI safety risks, elevated tech valuations, and the energy market disruptions caused by the United States' conflict with Iran.

Highlights

  • The Nasdaq Composite index climbed by 0.45 percent on Tuesday, bringing its year-to-date gains to over 17 percent.
  • Major US tech companies like Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft, which dominate the index, were central to this rise, fueled by the profit potential of AI after years of significant investment.
  • Companies such as Monolithic Power Systems and Shopify led the gains, increasing by 8.1 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively.
  • US President Trump's announcement of ongoing diplomatic talks with Iran helped to alleviate some geopolitical tensions in the markets.
  • Meta Platforms' new AI assistant, Muse, played a role in reigniting investor enthusiasm for AI prospects.

Details

On Tuesday, the Nasdaq Composite index closed with a 0.45 percent increase, pushing its year-to-date gains past 17 percent. The narrower Nasdaq 100 index, which tracks 100 top companies, also saw a notable jump of 0.82 percent. In contrast, the S&P 500, a broader measure of the US stock market, finished the day largely flat.

Leading the market's upward movement were Monolithic Power Systems, a Florida-based power circuit manufacturer, and Canadian e-commerce firm Shopify, which surged by 8.1 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively. Micron Technology, a leading memory chip maker, rose by 5 percent, while chip giant Nvidia gained 0.7 percent, and Apple edged up 0.2 percent. Meta Platforms, which had soared 11.4 percent on Monday due to its new AI assistant Muse, saw a slight drop of 0.63 percent on Tuesday.

In Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 and South Korea's Kospi opened higher, up about 1.4 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively. However, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index opened lower, falling more than 0.7 percent. Oil prices remained largely stable on Tuesday, following a more than 3 percent decline the previous day, attributed to improved oil flows from the Gulf and renewed hopes for diplomacy between Washington and Tehran.

Why it matters

Jay Goldberg, a senior analyst at Seaport Research Partners, noted that signs of diplomatic progress between the US and Iran have redirected investor focus toward AI's profit-generating potential after years of substantial investment. Goldberg stated, "We have been searching for a clear consumer use case to justify the AI spend, and many see Muse as just that product." This shift indicates that market sentiment is currently more influenced by technological innovation than by geopolitical or security concerns.
