Civilians have started evacuating from the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, following a localized ceasefire reportedly brokered by former US First Lady Melania Trump. Concurrently, Ukraine claims to have struck a significant rocket fuel production facility deep inside Russia.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Istanbul for discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with Black Sea shipping among the key topics on the agenda.

Highlights

  • Approximately 2,000 civilians were evacuated from Russian-occupied Oleshky under a localized ceasefire.
  • Ukraine claims to have hit the Kamensky rocket fuel production plant in Russia's Rostov region with drones and Neptune missiles.
  • Kyiv also reported strikes on Russian military depots in occupied parts of the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk regions.
  • Russia stated that an industrial facility east of Moscow sustained "significant damage" from drone attacks, with over 100 drones reportedly destroyed.
  • Ukrainian President Zelenskyy arrived in Istanbul for talks with Turkish President Erdogan.

Details

Oleshky, located in Ukraine's southern Kherson region, has been under Russian occupation since 2022 and has recently faced a severe humanitarian crisis. Both sides agreed to a localized ceasefire to extract an estimated 2,000 civilians still in the town. The truce began on Tuesday and is scheduled to end on Sunday night. Among the evacuees were a 1-year-old baby and a 94-year-old resident. Ukraine's Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets noted that the initiative required an "enormous amount of work."

The Ukrainian military stated that the attack on the Kamensky plant in Russia's Rostov region set a warehouse ablaze and damaged four production workshops. This plant reportedly supplies fuel for ammunition used by Russia's Uragan, Smerch, and Tornado-S multiple-launch rocket systems, as well as other missiles and air-launched weapons. Russia, for its part, indicated that Ukraine had resumed attacks on its refineries after a pause.

Why it matters

The evacuation of civilians from Oleshky highlights the importance of humanitarian corridors and international mediation in conflict zones. Simultaneously, Ukraine's increasing capability to target strategic sites within Russia continues to influence the course of the war and the escalation between the parties. Zelenskyy's visit to Turkey underscores that issues such as Black Sea security and the grain corridor remain critical for regional and international diplomacy.
