Highlights

  • The Saudi-led coalition announced it had intercepted a drone believed to be heading towards the Mecca area.
  • Houthi rebels have denied that their operations target the holy city or its surroundings.
  • The Houthis maintain their cross-border assaults are strictly focused on Saudi energy and military installations.
  • The coalition has previously claimed that Houthi forces have launched drones at Islam's two holiest sites, Mecca and Medina.
  • Recent days have also seen the interception of multiple ballistic and cruise missiles directed at various Saudi locations.

Details

According to Turki al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, the drone was neutralized on Friday morning. This incident followed the downing of another projectile earlier that day, which was reportedly aimed at western Saudi Arabia. Houthi representatives have refuted these allegations, asserting that their attacks across the border are exclusively directed at Saudi Arabia's energy sector and military infrastructure. A Houthi spokesperson characterized such claims as "fabrications and lies propagated by the criminal Al Saud regime."

Amidst the intensifying conflict, humanitarian organizations are raising concerns about the deteriorating situation for civilians. On Thursday, the coalition reported neutralizing a ballistic missile that was launched towards the kingdom's eastern region. Subsequently, two additional ballistic missiles, reportedly fired at the capital, Riyadh, were also intercepted and destroyed. The coalition further stated on Friday that a Houthi cruise missile targeting western Saudi Arabia was successfully intercepted.

Why it matters

These events underscore the ongoing escalation in the conflict between the Saudi-led coalition and the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. Allegations of targeting the sacred city of Mecca have the potential to significantly heighten regional tensions. Furthermore, the increasing frequency of missile and drone attacks highlights the deepening instability and humanitarian crisis prevalent in the region.
