  • The recent agreement facilitates the establishment of two new US military installations on the island.

Details

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, "Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!" He further claimed that experts believe Greenland contains some of the world's most extensive and readily available oil deposits, but did not offer any proof to substantiate these assertions. While Greenland is thought to hold considerable undeveloped oil reserves, their commercial feasibility is questionable due to the high costs associated with extraction, the severe Arctic environment, and environmental regulations. To date, no commercial oil production has commenced in Greenland. The island also boasts significant mineral wealth, including rare earth elements vital for electronics, renewable energy technologies, and military hardware.

In September, a pact was finalized between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland to alleviate tensions after Trump's repeated suggestions of taking control of the island, even by force. This document stipulates that the US will set up two additional military facilities: one at Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and another at Mestersvig in the east. The US currently maintains the Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland. The accord enhances the American military presence and outlines cooperation on missile defense, while also reaffirming Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland and the right of its people to self-determination.

Why it matters

Greenland's geographical position is strategically crucial for missile detection and defense, lying on a direct path between Russia and North America. Its location is also key for Trump's envisioned "Golden Dome" missile defense system. The ongoing melting of Arctic ice has also increased interest in potential new shipping lanes through the region. These developments underscore the growing geopolitical significance and resource potential of the Arctic, bringing these issues to the forefront once more.
