At least 15 people have died in overnight Russian strikes across central and eastern Ukraine, described by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as one of Russia's "most vile" attacks. A residential building in Pryluky, Chernihiv region, was destroyed, while Kyiv, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Zaporizhzhia, and Oleksandriya were also targeted.

Zelensky stated that Russia fired a total of 70 missiles, with one of the main targets being the country's energy infrastructure. Ukraine, in turn, announced that it had carried out strikes on targets in Russia's Perm, Samara, and Astrakhan regions within the last 24 hours.

Highlights

  • At least 15 civilians were killed in large-scale Russian attacks on Ukraine.
  • An apartment building in Pryluky, Chernihiv region, was completely destroyed, with search and rescue operations ongoing.
  • Major cities including Kyiv, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Zaporizhzhia, and Oleksandriya were affected by the strikes.
  • Ukrainian President Zelensky condemned the attacks as "vile" and called for air defense support from allies.
  • Ukraine also stated it targeted Russian energy facilities and training grounds in retaliatory attacks over the past 24 hours.

Details

In Pryluky, one of the focal points of the attacks, an apartment building was hit by a missile, initially resulting in 5 deaths and 26 injuries. Later, the Chernihiv Oblast Police reported that the death toll had risen to 9 after the bodies of three children were recovered. In Dnipro, 2 people were killed, with another 2 in Kyiv and 2 in Oleksandriya also losing their lives.

Ukrainian police shared images of what they claimed were fragments of an unexploded Russian Iskander missile in a Kyiv district. The images show missile fragments in an open area surrounded by high-rise apartment buildings. Zelensky reiterated his call for allied nations to provide air defense systems, stating that the Ukrainian military managed to shoot down only "some" of the missiles launched by Russia.

Why it matters

These attacks indicate an escalation of tensions in the Russia-Ukraine war and an increase in civilian casualties. The targeting of energy infrastructure, in particular, could create significant challenges for the Ukrainian population as winter approaches. Retaliatory strikes from both sides suggest that the conflict may intensify further.
