Highlights

  • North Korea launched roughly ten short-range ballistic missiles from its east coast into the sea on Thursday.
  • The launch occurred around midday local time, originating near Wonsan.
  • This event coincides with increasing border disputes between North and South Korea.
  • Pyongyang has conducted over ten missile tests this year, with the most recent prior launch on October 12.
  • Japan's Defense Ministry confirmed that the missiles landed outside its Exclusive Economic Zone.

Details

South Korea's military reported that the missiles were launched from an area close to Wonsan on North Korea's eastern seaboard. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff indicated that surveillance efforts are being intensified, and readiness for further launches is being maintained, with close information sharing among the United States and Japan. Japan's Defense Ministry, through South Korea's Yonhap News Agency, confirmed that the projectiles did not enter its Exclusive Economic Zone.

This latest missile test is one of more than ten conducted by North Korea this year, following a previous launch of several short-range ballistic missiles on October 12. Thursday's event unfolded amidst escalating friction concerning a border dispute that has further strained relations between Seoul and Pyongyang. Earlier, on September 21, three South Korean soldiers sustained injuries from landmine explosions within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). A collaborative inquiry by South Korea and the United Nations determined that North Korea had placed the landmines south of the military demarcation line more than a year prior. Pyongyang has disclaimed any involvement and issued warnings of retaliation should it be provoked. Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, characterized South Korea's demands for an apology as "despicable" and declined Seoul's offer of medical supplies. Last week, North Korea revealed intentions to restart propaganda broadcasts along the border and deploy new weapon systems in the vicinity. South Korea subsequently proposed discussions to define the border more clearly and avert unintentional military confrontations, but Pyongyang has yet to respond.

Why it matters

This missile launch underscores the ongoing instability on the Korean Peninsula. The growing border dispute with South Korea, coupled with recent diplomatic gestures from U.S. President Donald Trump towards Pyongyang, has fueled concerns that South Korea might be excluded from any prospective nuclear negotiations. This situation introduces significant uncertainty regarding regional stability, potentially influencing the balance of power and future diplomatic initiatives in the area.
