A localized ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia has come into effect in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, aiming to deliver humanitarian aid. The pause in fighting, which began early Tuesday morning, was brokered by former U.S. First Lady Melania Trump to provide food and medicine to civilians in the area. However, missile attacks resumed in Kyiv just minutes after the ceasefire began.

Highlights

  • Melania Trump led discussions with civilian negotiators from Russia and Ukraine after meeting with UN officials regarding the humanitarian situation in Oleshky.
  • The ceasefire commenced at 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning to facilitate aid delivery to Oleshky, where approximately 2,000 people are stranded.
  • The aid mission will bring doctors, medicines, food, and water to the town, followed by the opening of evacuation corridors.
  • The local ceasefire is expected to last until Saturday, though renewed missile attacks on Kyiv highlight ongoing mistrust.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the attacks demonstrate Russia's desire to kill and continue the war.

Details

The ceasefire applies to Oleshky, a town in the partially occupied Kherson region, where the Dnipro River separates Russian and Ukrainian forces. The town was captured by Russian forces on the first day of their full-scale invasion in 2022 and suffered severe flooding in June 2023 after a dam collapse. According to the UN, civilians trapped in Oleshky are unable to leave due to explosive mines and drone attacks in the area.

According to her office, Melania Trump engaged in talks with civilian negotiators from both Russia and Ukraine to facilitate this humanitarian aid mission. This local truce precedes a new round of U.S.-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine, expected next month, aimed at ending the war.

However, shortly after the ceasefire began, multiple ballistic missile explosions rocked Kyiv, and air raid alerts were sounded across various parts of the country. On Monday night, the capital also came under attack, with Russian ballistic missiles damaging a university campus, killing one person and injuring 10. In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, authorities reported that attacks on Monday night killed two people and injured four.

Why it matters

This localized ceasefire represents a significant effort to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. However, the ongoing attacks on Kyiv underscore the deep mistrust between the warring parties and the challenges of achieving a broader peace. Melania Trump's involvement highlights the efforts of international figures to draw attention to the humanitarian dimensions of the conflict.
