A localized ceasefire, brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump, began early Tuesday in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, aiming to facilitate an aid mission to the southern Ukrainian town. However, minutes after the ceasefire commenced, Russia launched ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv.

Highlights

  • A local ceasefire, brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump, has taken effect in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky.
  • The truce began at 3 AM on Tuesday to allow humanitarian aid into Oleshky and facilitate civilian evacuations.
  • Shortly after the ceasefire, Russian ballistic missile strikes hit Kyiv, damaging a major bridge, killing one person, and injuring over 10 others.
  • Up to 2,000 people are reportedly stranded in Oleshky, facing dwindling food and medicine supplies.
  • Melania Trump stated that Russian and Ukrainian civilian officials would visit residents to assess needs and provide coordinated support for those wishing to evacuate.

Details

According to her office, Melania Trump led discussions with civilian negotiators from Russia and Ukraine after meeting with UN officials who briefed her on the situation in Oleshky. This ceasefire is a precursor to a new round of US-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine, expected next month, aimed at ending the over 4.5-year-long conflict. The UN reports that approximately 2,000 individuals are trapped in Oleshky, unable to leave due to explosive mines and drone attacks in the area.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported that Russian strikes hit the Southern Bridge spanning the Dnipro River, damaging metro infrastructure. Attacks also targeted a university campus, resulting in one fatality and 10 injuries. Klitschko added that medical facilities in the capital sustained damage, with windows shattered in intensive care units.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian ballistic missiles struck a university campus and its vicinity, including Kyoto Park, an area near a metro station, and residential buildings. "The missiles hit very crowded areas, and there is not a single military facility nearby. This was a strike directly on the city, on its infrastructure," Zelenskyy said. In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, late Monday attacks killed two people and injured four.

Why it matters

These events underscore the ongoing intensity of the conflict in Ukraine, despite diplomatic efforts brokered by the US. While the Oleshky ceasefire is a crucial step for humanitarian aid, the simultaneous attacks on Kyiv highlight the fragility of peace negotiations and the high level of tension on the ground. This situation demonstrates the severe impact of the conflict on civilian populations on both sides.
